Director’s Summary of Performance

I am delighted to introduce the 2023/24 Annual Directors Report during another challenging and pressurised time for Social Services and Education. This is the statutory report, in accordance with the Social Services and Wellbeing (Wales) Act 2014, and after some revision this year, has a slightly different focus. Whilst the last twelve months have brought further financial pressures, increased need and greater expectations on a reduced workforce, I feel proud to share and showcase the developments across all service areas. I am sure that this demonstrates the passion and commitment from Social Care and Education colleagues on its own however, I am incredibly indebted to everyone for going the extra mile.

We appreciate that the coming year will be equally, if not more, challenging. We recognise as having the largest services and number of employees that we must make a significant contribution to ensure the financial stability of the council. There has been significant oversight of our large spend areas and plans in place to understand and manage the increasing costs in some areas.

This year there has also been a consideration of inclusion, our approach to diversity and difference and ensuring we are both anti-oppressive and practice consistent anti-discriminatory principles. There are some good examples within the report of our approach but we have much to do to further ourselves to ensure we create a work environment where people can and want to do their best. Working effectively in this diverse world starts with self-awareness, considering how you handle bias, poor treatment, and conflict, and demonstrating that you value others. This is the expectation I have for the service and continue to promote.
